  • The Experience

What sets Unruly Women retreats apart, is that our goal is to bring you to midwest mountain bike destinations and help you feel belonging in these communities by learning the local trail systems through our no-drop group rides, finding joy in mountain biking and movement through mindfulness and skill building, immersing in the local community to highlight local businesses, bike shops and people to help you feel like a local so that you’ll feel confident returning to ride in these beautiful places again and again.

Unruly Women’s goal is to build community, cultivate relationships, and nurture our skills to help empower each other to feel independent and safe while cycling - - whether solo or in a group.
By reminding each other to trust ourselves, follow our gut feelings and build each other up - because we’re so much stronger together - we can learn to balance patience, acceptance, and understanding, while also getting shreddy out on the trail.
We want to help everyone have a good time riding together, to try to extinguish the feeling of holding others back, or slowing up the group if we’re not “keeping up” and instead embody the deeper knowing that we’re out there to ride and enjoy ourselves, we’re exactly where we’re meant to be and that everyone has something to learn no matter the skill level they arrive with.
Outdoor recreation shouldn’t be a place of intimidation and exclusion. We all deserve to be out there, exactly as we are. Building each other up, not breaking each other down.
YOU BELONG.

More About Your Guides for this Retreat

Monica is the founder, event + retreat curator, guide + outdoor recreation educator for Unruly Women: an inclusive and accessible organization with a mission to cultivate community and empower all female identifying, femme and non-binary persons to reclaim their voice by unearthing their inner wild, outdoors.

She curates and guides retreats for backpacking and mountain biking in the Midwest, collaborates with small businesses and organizations in the community to host public events to bring community together and create a sense of belonging in the outdoor space, for everyone.

Monica is a certified mountain biking coach, wilderness first responder, published freelance writer and entrepreneur who quit her job to fulfill her dream of creating a safe space outdoors for everybody.

Hi! I’m Jen , and I love mountain biking! Actually, I love all biking, yet nothing takes my breath away like being in the woods, and I much prefer the smell of the trees and fresh air over the exhaust and stress of the paved roads. I’ve been road riding, touring and triathlon-ing for years. After some time in the saddle and a few technical clinics, I decided to become certified as a Level 1 NICA coach and assisted in coaching my son’s high school mountain biking team. In 2022, I received my certification as a BICP Level 1 Fundamentals Instructor and have coached clinics for the Loppet Cycle Works, the Superior Cycling Association and Unruly Women since. I also have certifications in Red Cross First Aid and NOLS Wilderness First Aid.

I remember being really intimidated when I first started riding. Learning even just a few fundamental skills, allowed me to gain confidence and opened a whole multi-faceted world of riding for me. ( Did I mention that mountain biking is good for both the body and brain??) My goal as a coach is to help give you the skills that will build your confidence on the bike and in the woods. There is so much fun to be had and I want to help you get there!

Jen has been coaching and guiding for Unruly Women since 2023!

“Hi my name is Jessica! I grew up north of the Twin Cities, and I’ve spent the last few years guiding on the North Shore. I have led trips in everything from canoeing to hiking. I am a registered yoga teacher who wants to let everyone know they don’t have to be flexible to enjoy yoga! I love having the opportunity to show people around the outdoors and teach them how to navigate it on their own. When I’m not working you can find me in my canoe or with my friends. I hope to see you on the trail!”

Jess has been teaching yoga on Unruly Women retreats since 2023.

Dayna has been mountain biking and working on bikes as a skilled certified mechanic for years. She adds joy to our retreats and creates a warm and inviting environment that’s inclusive and fun!! If there’s a feature, she’s bound to give it a try full send no regrets!
