Kekekabic Trail Maintenance Weekend

  • Gunflint Lodge 143 South Gunflint Lake Road Grand Marais, MN, 55604 United States (map)

Unruly Women is partnering with the Kekakabic Chapter of the North Country Trail Association to host a two-day volunteer event to work on the Kekekabic Trail, you can read more about the trail section here. The Kekekabic Trail is a rugged, primitive and minimally maintained trail - which means this is going to be some hard work for us! But, it'll be fun too :)

This event will be led by Monica from Unruly Women and Nicole from the Kekekabic Trail Chapter. Activities will include hiking along this beatiful trail while clearing vegetation, digging, branch removal, squatting/lifting and moving debris to clear the trail. We will be using handtools such as: shovels, loppers, tampers, post hole diggers, rakes, hand saws. We will not be using chainsaws or any powertools. ***You must be able to hike up to 6 miles (total) in one day to participate in this event, and please anticipate heavy work each day. ***

The 41-mile Kekekabic Trail is located almost entirely within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in the Superior National Forest. Its name is derived from Kekekabic Lake, located near the center of the trail. The Kek was originally built for fire tower access and firefighting. We will only be working on a portion of the trail for this two day work-weekend.

The North Country Trail Association (NCTA) who is the non-profit that develops, helps maintain, protect and promote the North Country National Scenic Trail, you can read more about their mission here.
